    Default Tree Swallow

Okay, I know there are myriad issues with this photo. I did my best to reduce the brightness/highlights on the whites, and I had to take the photo when the Swallow was above me. I was just happy that the bird stayed long enough on the branch for me to get him! I'm still trying!!!

Melissa if you provide the details concerning equipment and exposure we will be able to be more constructive. Just looking at what I see now I would suggest there is indeed myriad of issues, there is posterisation and sharpening and exposure/contrast issues here.
The whites on the chest/throat are blown i.e. too bright, the darks are too dark, there is a sharpening halo around the bird. The colours look muddy. Hope this doesn't sound too critical just trying to point out a few issues. You may well find some good tips to help you in the Educational Resources Forum. If you have specific questions there will be many willing to offer help/advice including me.

I'm sorry - I keep forgetting the EXIF info. Canon 1DX, 400 f/4 DO II with 1.4 t.c., 560mm, 1/1250 sec., f/5.6, ISO 250. I tried to work on reducing the whites and failed. This was the only time I was able to get a Tree Swallow to sit still, so I guess I'll go back to square one and hope I see one again or stick to Owls.

Cool post and perch. I see the processing issues too, sometimes the light is just wrong and you cannot save an image. also I am seeing magenta blotches on the background

Nice pose but poor processing is really holding it back. TFS

Thank you Will!!! I'm open to help and I'm open to working hard to improve. I have no designs on winning contests, but I do want my photos to be good enough to encourage folks to protect all wildlife.

Thank you Alex. I just feel too much of a novice to comment on others' photos! I will try, however.

Thanks Michael. The magenta blotches are blurred flowers. I hope to find this beautiful bird again.
