Default Cheetah cub in the evening sun

I took this image of a Cheetah cub in Mara North Conservancy, Kenya. On our first safari, we had the fortune to find a female cheetah with her two cubs just a few minutes before the sun was setting. Thus, the beautiful soft light.

The image was taken handhold with my Canon EOS 7D Mark II and the EF 500mm f/4L IS II.

    1/200 sec at f/5.6 and ISO 640.

Developed in Adobe Lightroom CC 2015 and no cropping at all.

Please let me have your comments.

    Regards Steen

Hi Steen - Nice evening light and profile pose of the cheetah. I would have gone for a bit more ss in the field and upped the ISO of the 7DII to 1600 which isn't a problem so long as you expose correctly and to the right. As posted some of the blacks on the face are choked and the image feels a bit bright in the HLs on the chest. If it were mine I might crop a little from the bottom to the bottom of the chest rather than having that bit of space between the top of the legs but not a deal breaker. Looking forward to more.

    TFS,
    Rachel

Hi Steen -- Lovely subject in a beautiful warm light . Agree with Rachel , the blacks look heavy and as a result the finer details are lost. Also you should go for higher ss where ever possible and in this case you could have easily achieved that as mentioned above. I also see a slight halo on top of its head upto the nose. Looking forward to see more from you .

    TFS !

Thanks Rachel and Haseeb for your very constructive comments ... ; - )

The cropping suggestion has actually improved the image significantly. Also, it seemed that I had overdone the contrast. Furthermore, the exposure was increased during development and is now back to as shot (reduced the bright on the chest). Due to your comments, I now have a much improved image - thanks!

    Regards Steen

    Hello Steen,

    Beautiful cheetah in golden light

Superb BG and colours, your RP deals with all issues mentioned above, wonderful PP work!

I took the liberty to do an RP as well. I really liked this image and felt like playing around a bit, hope you do not mind? I did a tiny curve adjustment and some extra sharpening on the cheetah, as well as flipped the frame horizontally to see what happens, here's the result:)
Happy to see you posting here in the Wildlife Forum and so looking forward to seeing more from you, so exciting to have new members

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea
