    Default Piping Plover at sunset

They have returned to the beaches of New York City for another season of trying to raise their young among the crowds of people at the beach. I got out there this weekend when I was the only person on the whole beach. Temperatures were in the mid 40's (fahrenheit) with a cold wind blowing off of the ocean. Approaching the birds was pointless as they would just run away to the miles of empty beach. So I laid down in the wet sand and waited for them to approach me. I picked the cleanest part of the beach with no debris so I could have the cleanest shot possible with the perfect colors of the setting sun. Then just waited to see if I would get lucky which thankfully I did.

Canon 1dx and Canon 500 f4ii + 1.4xiii. Tripod mounted while lying in the sand. F8, ISO 640, SS 1/2500

Processed with DPP 4.6 and PS.

Great work here! Lovely soft tones and details. I find it funny how that tactics always seems to work with the shorebirds, same problem I had over the weekend capturing the image I recently posted here of the Black-bellied Plover. Trying to get close is fruitless, they will always fly away further and further, but after I lay down and wait a bit, they usually approach me in a curious manner!

Thanks. Sometimes it works out well. Now Black-bellied Plovers are one of my most wanted species. I have seen millions of them and don't have any quality photos of them. In New York they are one of the if not the most difficult shorebird to approach. And when you try the lay down and wait, you may die before they approach! Coming in a close second are Whimbrel. Shy as anything. Please send one of your confiding plovers up here...

Thanks Arash. That is one of the things about the 1dx that makes a difference and that makes me long for a 1dx2. Just having those extra few frames can be the difference between catching the perfect action and not. Going from 10 to 12 may not seem like a ton but 20% more frames is.
