Serenity now
Australian Pelican (Pelecanus conspicillatus)
NSW, Australia
Canon EOS 7D Mark II | Canon 100-400 f4.5-5.6 II @ 260mm | Floating hide, manual exposure | 1/160 f/6.3 ISO 640
Basic PP, lightened shadows, levels, curves, slight crop, sharpen and slight contrast adjustment on BG
Whilst photographing cormorants fishing a while back I wanted to be in the floating hide before sun up. Just before dawn four curious pelicans paddled over to check me out.

I'm likely the least qualified to give any C&C at this point, but this sure looks lovely to me. Happy shooting!

What a wonderful capture! The light, poses, low POV, colors and reflections are superb. Tough call to know what aperture to use in a case like this: more DOF to get both front birds in sharp focus, or as you have done here which nicely blurs the ones in the background. Either way, it's a lovely image.

Super job. I love the symmetry of the birds beaks and reflections (almost) forming an X. Colours lovely. What a great bird to be able to photograph. The low POV really brings the image to life.

I'm really loving the feel of this image. You were spot on to get there before dawn. Love the 2 pelies facing each other, as well as the ones in the BG. It's such an artistic, thoughtful and peaceful image.

Remarkably beautiful and calming capture, Matthew. Love the light, low POV and eye contact from these inquisitive pelicans.

Thank you Bill (and others) you raise an interesting point re DOF the challenge of settings was further componded by the speed which the subjects were moving. Calm above but those huge paddles below the surface really push the birds about. They were approaching quite quickly then would stop, hesitate, start again, circle around change lead and so forth. I took a number of frames (on silent burst mode) and liked this one the most because of the symmetrical reflections, lead bird in focus and trailing DOF. Thanks again for your thoughts, very much appreciated as always.

Awesome looking frame Mathew!! Love the cool looking subjects and the nice poses and colors. Hard to judge DOF when something is moving, so it is what it is and you hope to get a nice frame, like this one! Well done
