    Default Morning Walk

These are 2 of the 3 male youngsters in one of the prides at Tswalu Game Reserve. They were following the females of the pride at a distance while the females hunted. Ultimately, they sat down to wait. This was taken at about 8 a.m. and the light was coming from the right side so it was tough to expose for the face while controlling the highlights on the inside of the leg. In the end, I decided it was better to expose for the face and deal with a few highlights.

Hi Rachel a nice head on view of the lady .... well timed to get the walking pose .I like the OOF young male ...as he gives the image a nice depth .
I am ok with the crop as presented .
I am not sure about the overall brightness and tonal range , as the image appears a bit flat .... specially in the 1/2 to 3/4 tones .
Agree of being difficult to shoot this kind of scenario , and you did quite well , having a lot of trouble to get everything into the histogram .

I like the composition and I appreciate the image is a tricky one to maximise. I would have gone for lower highlights and tried to get a little more tonal contrast. I know some folks will shudder when I say this but I think Nik tonal contrast detail extractor filter may well have been beneficial. WDYT?

Thanks Andreas and Jon. Jon, did you intend to post a rp using Nik?

I had originally processed this one with less highlights but decided that it wasn't true to the light and then did the brighter op. Here's my original version.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

Hi Rachel -- such lighting situations are so tough to handle and inspite of that you have done very in that aspect. I liked the framing as per your first post and definitely your RP is better in terms of processing and has that much needed punch to it .

Thanks Haseeb. The framing is the same as the images are identical and ff, just pp is different.

Btw Andreas, these are both adolescent males.

Very nice framing and composition here Rachel, and much prefer your RP as well, not sure if you have another frame with the male in a more head up pose?

For me when I'm shooting early morning where blown highlights are possible I will always try to shoot around -.7EV just to have that leeway and take care of shadow detail in PP later.

Thanks Marc. I do have one with more eye contact but more of the inner front leg was exposed to the sidelight and a bit blown. A trade-off I guess. Interesting about underexposing. No problems with introducing noise on the subject that way? I tend to expose for the subject and particularly the face.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

Rachel, I prefer the repost, but I feel it lacks a little contrast/tonal separation.
Nik filter would work better I feel on the original file as opposed to the jpeg.
