Effective composition in wildlife photography is often as much about what you EXCLUDE as it is about what you INCLUDE in the frame.

This little elephant calf was not really as isolated as he seems here (they rarely are, family members keep a close eye on these young ones), yet it was nice to be able to photographically isolate him from his herd in contrast to the multitudes of springbok that were around the waterhole.

    Techs:
    Nikon D3s
    Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8 VR-II @ 200mm
    f8.0 | 1/1600 SS | ISO-500

Morkel you usually come up with something different and this really fits the bill, given me food for thought " EXCLUDE" and " INCLUDE " very interesting observation.

Hi Morkel -- What a magnificent scene ! I just loved this frame , isolating the individual against the contrasting white rocks and the antelopes in the BG are providing this a very artistic look . Just works for me . Superb !

    TFS !

Hi Morkel - Easy to tell this is Etosha. I like all the springboks in the bg. Something seems a bit amiss in the pp though, there's a heavy halo around the ele (most apparent around the head and front legs) and the rocks in the fg look oversharpened and crunchy (no pun intended).

    TFS,
    Rachel

    thanks folks
Rachel I just did the levels test for halos and really could not see a "levels halo", I will concede that I perhaps sharpened FG one round too much so perhaps what you see is a sharpening halo

Hey Morkel i really like the frame with the lonesome Ellie and the mass of springbok as contrast .
All does look good to in general and agree it is easy to say where this was taken ....
I might process it differently from my POV , as for me the contrast is quite strong and the elephant is a bit too dark for my taste .
I see where Rachel is coming from .... and i have to agree with her , histogram is clipped on both ends , might be down to web compression. But there is a slight halo around the elephant from my POV.

Nevertheless a fine image , well done Morkel .

    TFS Andreas

Hi Morkel, it is an unusual image of having a lone baby elephant against the springbok as a BG. I didn't recognized the BG as springbok at first. The contrast of the dark elephant and the bright white of the rock and the dust makes this image interesting. Loi

Morkel - Not sure why you're not seeing it. Here's a rp using the levels trick showing the halo around the ele.

Rachel - the version on my computer does not show that. Must be web compression or something? Weird.

The springbok BG really makes the image for me, very unique.

Hi Morkel, I like the capture with the SB as the backdrop and the lonesome calf, but agree that it has a 'painted' look rather, than a photographic rendition???

    Cheers Steve
The "painterly look" is SOOC (lots of dust in the air?) and that's why it appealed to me.
