    Default Lightening over the Sound

I found something that I think I like photographing as much as birds. We had a spectacular storm last evening. Here's my first attempt at lightening and I would like to learn how to do this better. I set up my 40D on a tripod, 15 sec exposure, f8, ISO100, and used a ND filter. Wide angle lens, 16x35mm @ 33 mm.

Thanks for your help. (Obviously, I don't care for how the top of the bench is on line with the sand!)

    Grace,
What a dangerous time to be on the beach that I could never recommend.
However, risk / reward worked and you have a very moody, intense image:).

I love the mood you captured and the way the exposure was handled.
A correct exposure is having your image look the way you wanted it to.

IMO a little wider view would improve this image.
I also feel a lower angle, closer and wider would prevent the beach edge from intersecting the top of the bench.
A higher angle would also work putting the top of the bench in the sand and offering more water.
(Nice that you saw that, noticing minor flaws usally means someone in on thier way!)

Again, IMO these minor adjustments would really put this image over the top.

I like it a lot Grace, fully agree with James !!

One suggestion for making better storm images, at least more dramatic is a lightening trigger !!! Mounts on top of your camera and works like a charm. They are not that expensive !!!

Thanks so much for your comments, James. I wasn't too worried about the danger at this point, but soon after, hopped in the car. (I think that Ted may have upped my life insurance when he saw this.)

Really alot of fun trying something new. (for me) Sure wish I could redo because of that bench, (Don't know why I didn't see it at the time) but will have to wait for the next opportunity.

Thanks, Al. A lightening trigger....will add that to the list! Sounds like fun, and one can never have too many gadgets.

Grace, Other than the bench being in line with the beach and ocean I like it in the photo. Jim

    Hi Grace!

I like this a lot! It is very moody and tells a great story ... empty bench looking out at a bare beach, stormy clouds and flashes of lighting. The colors are wonderful, and the objects and lines are nicely placed (mostly).

I was to tempted jump in and try some PS work to enhance the merger, and increase the width view ... but if it is within your ethics ... I think you would benefit, and learn so much more if you were the one to try it yourself and express your vision. Please give it a try, and please do repost your results!! I think there is a lot of potential! I would also see if working in some rule-of-thirds might be helpful.

Hi Nicki! A lighting trigger is a device that attaches to your camera body, and senses the flash of the lighting ... and triggers your shutter automatically.

    Hi Grace!

As Artie says, "Gotta love it!!"

I am looking forward to your repost! The bench merge should not be too difficult to move around ... you can try moving the shoreline or try moving the bench relative to each other. Also, extending the canvas should also be relatively easy, as you do not have a lot of busy elements. Try giving Transform a try. The lighting bolt can really POP ... and your eye will be drawn to the brightest object.

Very nice image Grace. Love the composition as presented. You should try experimenting with infra red.. Lots of fun!!!!
