Default Thirsty Herd with Feathered Friends

I had several sightings of huge buffalo herds while in South Luangwa N.P., Zambia. I find it really difficult to depict the absolute awe that one experiences while seeing a herd of several hundred buffaloes moving en masse. So instead here I decided to share one of a small fraction of the herd at the very productive, large waterhole. I'll share some larger herd shots in the future.

    C&C welcome and appreciated. Thanks,

Hi Rachel, nice behavioural image and the fact you have other Avian species within the frame too.

If possible going lower would have been better I feel, even just to step out of the vehicle and sit beside it, so would more at 'eye level'. I might look at a frame either before or after so the Jacana isn't overlapping the Hamerkop, but it's not a deal breaker. Techwise, well you know my thoughts. Framing, I would come in either side so the trim is either just after or before the front legs as it won't hurt the image at all and would improve things.

Hey Rachel - photographing Buffalo herds in harsh light is a particularly difficult exercise imo ! I agree that the birdlife adds nicely here

Rachel I really like this, the detail and tones in the buffaloes is remarkable. Oxpecker Jacana and Hamerkopp - not bad gong I'd say! The light is absolutely superb - well done. I agree cropping bilaterally a little to put the heads nearer to the edge of the frame would help concentrate attention. Hey looking forward to more of these

Thanks Steve, Basil and Jon, much appreciated. I'll take a look at the suggested crop.

    Thanks again,

Wow, love this! Great mix of species - I had fun going over all the individuals. As for cropping on both siders, I agree, but not as much as suggested: At left I would come in "mid-leg" to avoid clipping it at the edge (as it is now), and same at right only to avoid having the individual cut off at the neck. Boy, this is a really fun image to study!!

Rachel 3 different bird species and the Buffalo's wallowing in the muddy water, image that keeps you looking to see if you have missed anything.

Hi Rachel -- A very nice frame with full of life. I like the whole scene here with nice PP work of yours. I am not sure about the cropping though something between Daniel and Steve's suggestion i guess but a nice image overall .

    TFS !

Thanks Daniel, Keith and Haseeb for the comments and suggestions. I'll have to post another image from the same sighting where at least one buffalo's back is completely covered with oxpeckers (no exaggeration) and there are some other species present too.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel
