    Default Fighting for a male

    Attached Images Attached Images

I was watching a pair of snail kites mating and the male building the nest, when out of nowhere the female was attacked by another female, I witness about four clashes and many chases for the next hour. The action was so fast that the shots are not the best quality.

    40D, 500mm, 1.4TC, 580 EX Flash, wimberly head, tripod
    1/250, F5.6, ISO 400, 700mm

    Comments and recommendations appreciated.

Wonderful interaction. Try a faster shutter speed next time IMO 1/250 is not enough in these types of action shots.

Man, talk about action!!!!! I wish you were using a higher ISO, 40D can handle ISO 1000 if need, I think!
If this was early morning, as I believe, higet ISO would have launched you a BBC prize :)

Yesterday I got the mating at ISO 1250, to grant decent shutter speeds.

Nonetheless, talk about being in the right place at the right time!!!!!

Love the action Raul I'll be tough capturing the action We don't have the best light over there and you probably need to stop down for dof !!!

Excellent poses for all birds and good crop selection !!! Sure wish I get a shot at one of these fights !!!!

Great timing and I agree that it is too bad you didn't have a higher ISO at the time.

Congrats to you Raul on a nice photo! You've learned a lot with this first effort. Hopefully persistence will pay off and you'll witness similar action with your camera in hand set to a faster shutter speed. Thanks for posting!

Agree, painful rookie mistake... I was setup for peching birds... when all the action started.
Too late, but for next time I'll be ready, I going to start using custom setting to switch to "action" shots on the 40D and MKII.

Raul, I am always set up for action, and if I have to do a perched bird, I just move the focus point to the eye and presto! If the bird moves, I'm on him!
