    Default Northern Pintail closeup

When I found out there that was a somewhat tame Pintail hanging out in Central Park I got there the first chance I got. Perfect way to try out my new 1DX. Really is a fantastic camera and not sure why I waited so long to go full frame. Guess I was stuck on the crop factor thing of my 7d2 as so many of our birds are small and far away. To me the image quality is just so much better on this camera. Anyway this is the type of situation that my 7d2 would not have performed well in. The Pintail at one point got so close that I could not get the whole bird in the frame. I know I could push this camera way more than ISO 800 but wanted to compare ISO 800 against what my 7d2 did. I did not want to blow out the whites so in order to do that had to leave the rest quite dark. Well that was easily remedied in post as lifting the darks was a breeze. Early morning light.

Canon 1DX and Canon 500 f4 ii. Tripod mounted while lying on some rocks. ISO 800, F6.3, SS 1/320

Converted in DPP 4.5. Exposure lifted to .5, highlights -2 and shadows +2. Used the click white balance dropper to get my whites just right. In PS I cropped a bit, sharpened and applied NR with Neat Image. Was such a big file I had to lower it to 90% to get it to fit for this site so not sure if that messed a bit with the image quality.

Isaac, to this novice eye, the colors and detail of the duck and the water are amazing! I love the small beads of water on the head.

Looking forward to seeing more from your 1DX.

Lovely image Issac. Love all the white tones and the detail in the dark ones. The drop of water on the beak and the orange background took the image up to another level.

Thank you for sharing and congrats on the new toy..Enjoy!

    Hi Isaac,

Beautiful image - love the colour on the water and the soft light on the bird - brings out the feather details very nicely. Especially like that shiny wet bill and the drop of water.

    Thanks for sharing, Gerald

Congrats on the 1dx! I have the 1dx and 7d2, and the crop camera doesn't see much action these days, having seen your previous work, I'm sure you'll have no issues at all switching bodies.

I love the tones on the head and the details on the breast here, nicely processed, and a very nice portrait.

    Mike
