    Default Mother Bobcat and Kitten

This was taken a few years ago, after seeing the mother bobcat the day before I went and looked around the area the following day.
I walked by this area 5 minutes earlier with no luck and was taken by surprise when I backtracked and was just about to leave. A moment I'll never forget.
The light was filtering through the pine branches above. This was a full frame shot cropped vertically for composition.

    Thanks for looking.

Hi Tim - Quite a find. Definite cuteness factor with those big eyes of the kitten looking right at you. You handled the dappled light well. I do find the comp slightly awkward. Perhaps post the ff and see if people have alternate crop suggestions.

    TFS,
    Rachel

Rachel, unfortunately the image is full frame so it's already cropped tight top and bottom, I just got rid of the junk on the sides with the vertical comp. You might have seen this image briefly on one of the Smithsonian's 30 min. Spotlight specials called "Picture Perfect" it also received special recognition as one of the Smithsonian's favorite images representing Mothers of all kinds and an editors pick of the week.

    Thanks Tim

What a great capture! I am amazed that Momma was so calm as to close her eyes with you around. Every time I have chanced upon a bobcat or lynx, it has been a fleeting (or fleeing!) moment.

Hi Tim -- What a sight and I liked the spot light on the eye of the kitten , yes the comp is a bit awkward but nothing you could do since it is a FF . I feel though a bit more SS would have been better but not sure how much you can push the MK III body when it comes to ISO .

    TFS !

Time - hats off to you I think it is a super shot and you did exceptionally well given your circumstances, you were so lucky but you were ready and this really is a very memorable image.

Incredible Tim,it's not only the capture it's self, but you were also on foot and dapplled light ,stunning image I love the kits ear pulled down slightly almost by the presence of mum almost as much as the more obviously adorable eyes... enchanting mate

A rare and sweet moment here!
I think you were dabbling on the edge of acceptable DOF with f5 here, though it looks fine at this resolution.
    Challenging light handled well...

Tim nice capture. I have spent lot's of time outdoors and have never seen any cats. I like the light especially the way it captures the kitten.I have no idea how you got so close the mom is so content . Shows no sign of you're presence.
