    Default Slow Mom

I captured this photo of a momma sloth and baby back in 2010. I was out and about, early morning, on the OSA Peninsula, Costa Rica. Mom had come down to do her business while I waited. And waited. And waited. I was delighted to see that she had a tiny baby clutch to her. When you move as slow as a sloth, it's most definitely a design flaw when you have to come down to the ground to poop! Anyway, this sloth was very cooperative while I got a few pics, and I left her to do her thing undisturbed.
no exif with the picture. I'll have to look it up.

What was the camera, lens, any extenders, flash, Raw, JPEG, there must be something you could add Jonathan?

Sorry Steve. I posted this from the ferry and didn't consider all the information I already knew!
I edited the post to include the information.

Sounds like quite a sighting! Sweet little baby, it looks adorable and it has all the comfort and confidence in being with its mother. Good exposure. I do wish for two main things though: more room for the baby's behind at the left edge, and more dof for the mother's face (I realize you may have been short on lighting conditions to stop down). Thanks for sharing!

    Thanks Daniel,
I'm still finding that oftentimes I am so excited to finally witness something special, and am so anxious to get the shot, that I am not careful enough to make sure I have all the elements of a good capture intact, whether it be exposure, exposure +-, blown elements, dof composition, etc, etc! Many a "darn" expressed on my part. I really need to get out more this year to get more practice under the belt!

Hi Jonathan - Good to see a sloth and seeing the baby certainly makes it a bit more special. I agree with Daniel on both more room to the left and also more dof for mom's face to be in focus. You did well to make it not look flashed despite using the flash.

It would be great to have your thoughts on other people's wildlife images. We recommend commenting on 3-5 other wildlife images each time you post one of your own. Just tell us what you like or don't like about an image.

Sweet to see a species we don't often see photos of (not that they should be hard to track and photograph given the speeds at which they move, haha).
I agree with comments made above about the framing that could have better included baby. I also think you could have gone for more DOF, but you don't mention the aperture or ISO so it's hard to determine what could have been done differently?

Unfortunately I failed to leave room at that end of the picture when I took the shot. Rookie mistake. I'll have to remember that next time a shoot a sloth with a baby!
