Default DPP 4 Slow Opening File or Making Changes

    Attached Images Attached Images

    Good Morning Everyone,

I purchased "The Photographer's Guide to Canon Digital Photo Professional 4.4" by Arash and Arthur.

I had been using LR 6 for all of my photography work, but decided to try the workflow of these two well known professionals. I am surprised how slowly the program opens files and makes changes. As per the guide, I have DPP preset to Luminance/Chrominance Noise and Sharpness to what they recommended for my 7DII. So I understand that the raw file will have these changes made when I first open the file.

BUT, it literally takes 5-6 seconds from the time I double click on the file to the time that it shows the file in focus. This even happens to previously opened/saved raw files. I am unable to select the option to use my computer's graphic processor.

LR 6 CC, Photoshop CC and Final Cut Pro X all work very fast on my machine. I can even edit FCP X 4K video without problems.

Any ideas on how I can speed up DPP 4? I am including a screen shot of my iMac's configuration. The internal hard drive is a 500GB SSD.

    Thanks!
    Marlo

Hi Marlo, your best bet is uninstall and then clean install the latest version of DPP (4.5.x). If you are suing multiple monitors try to use one monitor only. Overall DPP doesn't run as fast as it should on Macs as it does on Windows because Apple do not have Nvidia GPU's.

Thank you Arash. In fact, I have a 2nd Monitor Dell 27" 4K monitor. P2715Q. I will do as you suggested. I realize you highly recommend using DPP4, but if I decide that the slow response time isn't worth it, I can always transition to Bridge then use Photoshop CC

    Morning Arash,

I just wanted to update you on my DPP slowdown. I deleted DPP4, downloaded from Canon and reinstalled. It is now very fast with no pause in between any edits. I didn't even have to turn off my Dell monitor!

    Thank you,
    Marlo

    Not a problem Adreas!

    Open a Finder Window
On the left panel, click on Applications
On the right folder, look for DPP4. My particular file was located inside of the folder labeled "Canon Utilities" then inside "Digital Photo Professional 4"
Click on the icon for DPP4 and drag to the trash and delete trash.

    thanks Mario
with your method you just delete the app and not all the prefs and plist files that are being installed when you install the app .
And i bet there are a number of hidden files installed , too.
i think for a " clean install" you have to delete all of that

What is the advantage of using Photo Mechanic as opposed to using DPP or other software? I honestly don't do any sorting of the images. Download them from the card to my E drive and name the file. Open the whole file in DPP. Pick the images that I want to keep and then go to the system drive, select all of my images and then unselect the ones I wanted to keep. Then just delete the rest. Seems fast to me. Just wondering what the benefits are of working with other programs.
