Hi Sid For macro work you might be better off going to manual focus, thats what I do most of the time. I get it close focusing the lens and then rock back and forth for critical focus. When your af point is off the bug hunting will start !!!
For Dragonflies and other insects if you want the entire insect within the dof try placing it parallel to the film plane. Even stopping down you will not have enough in which case you might go the other way. Photograph wide open, select the area you want sharp and let the others go oof !!
I like the pose with the wings forward and tail up, would recommend trying to focus on the eye. Point of focus seems to be behind on the top of body. I like the bg and would tone down the perch a bit.
btw one interesting thing you can do which is a challenge but doable !!! Make multiple exposures with different point of focus and blend them together !! Does produce an amazing image !!!!
