This falls into the same 'bracket' as the Grey Heron I posted in Avian, the image isn't going to win any awards/prizes, it was just from a morning walkabout in the cold Winter light, but I wanted to test the camera & lens with some more refinements I've made, but also to see how some of the original options available on the MKI have changed for the better I think, now in the MK2!!!
The grey railing behind are not ideal, but I quite like the body posture and curved front paw, however as I said, this is more about me testing. In the coming weeks I will go back with a different lens to get some 'quirky' shots, but I may need a 'helper' for that, as these guys are really, really cheeky - the 'Fagin' of the squirrel world
The Grey's over here are still classified as vermin and certainly not as good looking as our native Red's.

Hi Steve - Great pose and dof, though the front paw looks sharper than nose or eyes (?). I don't mind the bench but agree the vertical railings aren't ideal.
Hi Steve your testing shot is quite neat ... meaning the subject .
Like the frontal view and the pose of the squirrel with tail up .Well processed in terms of color and tone .
Technically i like the Heron a lot more , as the detail seems finer and better sharpened , might be that feathers are easier to sharpen compared to fine hairs .
Are you happy with the testing sequence ... any progress ?
I do not think the paw looks sharper .AS there are different type of hairs on feet and nose it might look it is sharper , but on the nose the hairs are a lot shorter and finer .

Thanks Rachel, FP bang between the eyes, but a fraction up, the paw is probably on the same plane of focus, sharpening is even across the subject so no variation.

Hi Andreas, look at the techs, this was with a zoom, the Heron was with a fixed lens, the fixed lens will be better.

Definitely signs of progress compared to MAF in the field in Bots, not a good idea, plus just refining the various elements and shooting frame combos. I want more time, but weather & commitments are not allowing it, so ongoing as and when, you will do more with the seals I'm sure, but you have already seen some of the test images already. If I still think it needs certain tweaks in the Focus, Canon can sort that as it's far more refined.
Just remember, if you go to 14fps, it won't be 14, it will vary even if you have set it to 14, you may also like to test the Auto tracking, but don't rely on it, just see and the Silent settings.
Steve , for sure i recognized the different kit you used , i was thinking the plain 200 - 400 must be equally good when using the fixed 500 with 2x TC , well i might be wrong .
I hardly use the 14 fps , at least i have not used it with the MK I, the MK II might be better . I will see if i find the time and peace to toggle in the various camera settings .
This is interesting Steve,I looked at this yesterday and did think the paws are sharper than the ears and still think the ears look a bit soft and maybe the nose .Look forward to reading other comments.
Here you go Rachel a quick screen grab from DPP, from recollection I thought the FP was a fraction up, but not, just bang on where it needed to be, so at f/9 there is enough DoF unless Canon have made an error on calibration?
