Love this bird and I never managed to get real close to it....did you use a blind? I loved the ruffed feathers on the head and the open beak. My main issue here is the light angle that I don't find it ideal. The visible eye is in the shadow; would have been better if the sun came from directly behind you. TFS.

I love the pose you caught here Allen. Fantastic facial expression and nice detail on the bird. Agree with Lorant about the eye in the shadow.

Hi Lorant and Will, thanks for commenting. I staked out this perch in full camo where I had seen the bird frequent before. I sat still waiting for the bird to come - no blind. I agree about the light angle - unfortunately the ideal angle would have put me in the water. I was hoping the angle the bird chose to perch would put more of the head in direct light - maybe next time.

Almost Allen, but for now its a splendid image with expression. I like the open beak and the head feathers. Maybe a bit of clean-up below the perch, not sure what that is... TFS

Really tough to get close to these guys. And judging from the great detail, you must have been close. Great open beak. Too bad about the light, but I wonder if you could open up the shadows some, and brighten the eye? Maybe a little more room above?

Allen I really like this shot he looks a really cheeky sort of chap doesn't he? I have taken the liberty of using a luminosity mask to lift the shadows a little WDYT?

Nice repost Jonathan - looks like I can go a bit brighter in the shadows. Thanks!
