Another image from the pride we spent time with, however that - 'oh so cute, can I have one, please can I tickle his tummy', now shows a different side, the born killer!!!

With blood stained face and paws from gorging on the Warthog kill, this cub just laid in the shade quietly digesting his meal, occasionally washing and then being stalked on occasions by his brothers & sisters.

Being in the thicket the shade also challenged any available light, but the 1DX's just delivered no problem, however, it was also really hard to get any good angles where OOF leaves, branches etc were not in the way, although I feel I managed to avoid things fairly well, with main elements - the eyes being free of any distracting items.

I thought about cropping about an inch off the foot so the paw gave the impression of resting on the trim, but I quite like it as presented.

Thanks to those who viewed or posted a comment on the previous thread.

Hi Steve - There's an intimacy to the image that comes through nicely and you handled the dappled light well. I would expect the lips, nose and areas around the eyes to be darker. I understand the light was mostly flat with the cub in the shade but would still give the image a little bit more punch. Personal preference I would darken the lit blade of grass.

Thanks Rachel, but as I said to you, the majority of the subject was in flat shade, the only bit of light was from the RHS piercing through the thicket, as a result with no light to provide 'life' to the colour, therefore it will be flat/drab in appearance. Also, in the heat & time blood dry's back to a very flat brown, just think back to when you cut yourself, the bright red only stems from when it's fresh, then in time, it then darkens.

If I darken the leaf it won't make sense, so happy to leave as presented.

Steve - not the leaf, the grass on the right.

Hi Steve -- A mean looking Cub ! How quickly they grow-up , just a matter of time for these big cats . I like the intensity in the eyes and the blood stains are adding to the feel of the image . Yes there are distracting elements but most of them have been taken care of and to me they are not acting as distracting elements at all. Details and sharpness are good as usual and again a tight frame nicely presented .

    TFS !

You can see the hard life of a Wild Lion in the eyes....Colors look a little washed out but I wasn't there.
Amazing detail and IQ as always. I must say the OOF grass is a little ditracting.
I like the addition of the blood...

Hi Steve ... the little Lion does look a bit grumpy ....Nice look and the eyes are so wild !!!!
The guy must have had a feast .... looking at all the blood in the fur .
Really like the soft tonality and the soft tonal variations in the fur .... well slowly i see this as being very close to reality ...... but still i would give a tad more tonal depth through a ever so slightly channel adjustment .... i would take the green one .See this as a personal pref .
As always very nice IQ and techs to your standard .Understand the shooting limitations .... so the OOF grass is for sure no issue , all important parts are clearly visible . Would not change the crop .

    Hi Andreas,

It took over ten minutes before the Warthog was finally dispatched, towards the end the other female lioness was eating it alive, then the pride just tore in. The cubs just went for broke, ironic as they fed most days.

i would take the green one. See this as a personal pref .
I wonder where that came from, LOL. I need to see the file & histogram and if there is any more lee-way in extracting a tad more tone, but leaving the colour as is, as that for me is close enough.

BTW you may find D+ useful at the RIGHT time with the seals, as it's better on the MK2.

Hi Steve .... not only where you think it came from .......a lot of experimenting on my side was involved at times .But with a little help from my friends ...The Beatles ..i got the start to explore . I guess it is not a must to do , but could make a difference , and for sure just at low opacity.
Thanks for the D+ suggestion , will try to remember ... at the moment the weather forecast is saying i will not need D+ , but as it is right in the middle of the North sea , weather might change quickly .

Will see . I go on Monday .

    Cheers Andreas

Enjoy next week, but remember, you may find you forget to make changes to the Cases as you toggle between the bodies, as the MK2 behaves differently to the the MK1, it's more refined!!!

As said - those eyes, the expression and the blood tell an intriguing story !!!

Love the look in the eyes, combined with the shades of blood Steve.
Given what you said about setting/shade/light I would still add some LCE or midtone contrast with a 20% opacity layer for a tad more punch.

Lovely details it seems like a very private moment for the cub tucked away there. Your title is very apt, he does not look very innocent at all.

Steve the light in this grabbed me instantly even at thumbnail, there is something in that considering these last weeks,a purity to that.

This is lovely I'm fighting over ears Steve, gut feels I want them in frame. the portrait works beautifully Steve eyes so compelling, I like the lower paw placement , I know only too well how tricky blades of grass and veggies can be to find a clear viewed you did well,it's frustrating though and hard with little time. The detail is wonderful, the story behind the blood thought provoking but Steve that dappled light you have caught just makes this special for me.

Mate thanks so much elsewhere sorry slow. Can't think ,just the light and story in this one made me need to reply.

He it'll rain now I'm done
    Merry christmas
