Down the Gull (et) - Pacific Gull
Pacific Gull (Larus pacificus)
Tasmania, Australia
Canon EOS 7D II | 500mm f/4 II | Handheld | Manual exposure | 1/2000 f/8 ISO 800 | almost full frame
On a recent road trip I pulled over to nab a coffee and saw this giant gull (Australia's largest) ripping into a beach washed cuttlefish which must have been tough as old boots. To the bemusement of onlookers sipping lattes in the cafe I spent the next 20 minutes shooting the gull on the wet sand and rain - crazy? heck yeah!

Great shot Matthew. Love the low angle, head turn of the gull and the great colors that pop with the otherwise monotone image.

What a massive bill! I love it grabbing some food, and the strand curled around it. Great low angle, and exposure is spot on. As posted, I do feel the eye has some softness to it.

Terrific POV, colors and action. Probably a bit of DOF issue, with the bird that close to you. Nice to be in a place where you could get a latte after groveling around in the wet sand.

Great frame the fact that the cuddle fish is so messy with the droplets on the back of the bird etc really adds to it.

Nice frame of this huge looking Gull eating it's breakfast. The details and exposure look great. Well done

I like the low angle, composition, huge bill and exposure. I agree with sharpening the eye a bit more. Nice image Matthew.

Thanks everyone for views and comments, particularly around the softness of the eye. Bill was bang on re: depth of field as the focus point was on the front edge of the cuttlefish. I have other shots where the focus is locked on the birds eye but I like the strand of cuttlefish around the birds bill and legs so went with this frame. The eye is already a little crunchy from over sharpening so probably can't push it any further unfortunately I will post another frame from the sequence for comparison.
