    Default Short eared owl

    Canon 1DX Canon 500mm f4 L IS II & 2xTC III Auto ISO 500 + 0.3 1/1250 sec f8 (After this sequence I switched to Manual ISO and 1/2500 sec)
Still a large crop I regret to say but I think patience will eventually reward me with large in the frame shots.
DPP4 & CC PS slight luminosity mask adjustment to mid tones and brightest plumage.

Jon it's just the way I see Short Eared Owls in there hunting mode ,I know it's nice if they come a bit closer but I personally would be very happy with this. That Yellow eye stands out on the darkest day and just adds so much to the image.

Great yellow eye, and a nice hint of habitat. I like the comp. Sooner or later I'm sure they'll come closer, but I'd be happy with this.

Beautiful eye and bg. It almost looks like a painting.

Looks good to me, too! The only thing I'd do here is either cover up, or crop away, the sliver of grey/blues peeking in along the top edge.

Very nice Jon. What beautiful colours they are on the BG/FG. Compliments the owl very nicely. I too would crop the top edge.

Thanks very much everyone, I very nearly did crop that edge but decided to leave it to show just a hint of sky, in fact I nearly moved the crop up a bit more.
Still they don't come closer in fact they refuse to come to the same spot they came to last year.

Beautiful image Jonathan! I like the setting, composition and complimentary colors. I too would crop out that hint of sky at the top but that is personal preferences.
