You have a fine looking woodpecker here. Technically it is a Northern Flicker and your subspecies would be the red-shafted. I like the perch and the background as well. Head angle is not ideal, but the major problem is that the image is very dark and the bird is soft. I think you would have been better off shooting at a higher ISO to get more shutter speed. Especially since your bird is in the shade. You could always tone down the bright areas of the branch. Not too familiar with your camera and sensor but with my camera I would probably want the ISO to be around 800 or so and my shutter speed over 1000. You would be able to freeze the action more and get better exposure on the bird.
Hi Terry, I concur with what Issac said, the D800 has no issues going over iso 800+ really good camera imo. That said still a nice shot, BG is very nice, well done. TFS!
