    Default Wild Dogs Morning Antics

This wild dog pack had already had a kill but were still on the hunt at first light. They used the road to move easily and quickly but stopped here to roll in elephant poo. It is believed that they do this to mask their own scent. Like with Marc's image I think the two dogs in the bg trotting away from the viewer adds to the feeling of being on the hunt/move.

Hi Rachel, nice light here and interaction, although is it the dust churned up that's 'clouding' the main element of interest? With this action I would have started at ISO2500 because they are so quick and you want a good SS IMHO.

I think the two dogs in the bg trotting away from the viewer adds to the feeling of being on the hunt/move.
With the main behaviour going on, having the two dogs trotting away I would not have guessed they were hunting, but more likely just to be on the move, but just my take.

Hi Rachel, interesting animals and image. It must be wonderful to encounter and photograph these dogs. Very unique markings, each one different. Not sure what you use to process but if you wanted to lessen the dust around the dogs the Reduce Haze filter in Lightroom CC would help. Thank you for posting and sharing.

Thanks Steve and Joe. Yes, it is dust that they kicked up as they ran around and I like the effect it has on the light and image.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

    Dearest Rachel,

A very good evening to you,

I am delighted to see something so different and so unusual. The early morning light here - combined with the dust - brings about a certain mood I quite like. It must have been a glorious morning for the painted ones, bellies full from the previous kill and already looking forward to the next meal!

This is one successful pack of Wild Dogs. They look happy and content and their playfulness draws the viewer in, so is the golden light and the haze. I might be tempted to remove a tad from the bottom of the frame but unsure, still pondering about it. Love the chap on the ground and his grin, I do understand the behaviour element here but at the same time I cannot help thinking how smelly he must have been when he finished rolling in dung:)

Rachel, if this was mine I would have probably tried to get a bit more "pop" from the main characters, but that's just me - I gather you prefer to stick to a more natural look. This is a wonderful scene, well captured, the timing is great - I took great pleasure viewing. I wish I had something new to share but I have not had time nor much opportunity lately, I am swamped with work and various commitments. I still enjoy my visits to BPN and miss the interaction here tremendously.

Thank you so much for sharing,

    Warmest regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

I like the dusty scene gives the image a nice feel, what you say about the Dogs leaving the scene the one on the right giving a flick of it's tail must be thinking that's a disgusting habit I'm off!I like this Rachel

I've seen them do this a couple of times before - and yes spot on it is for scent-masking.
I like the light and moment, perhaps needs some shaved off the bottom here Rachel?

Hi Rachel -- quite late on this, but i agree with the above. I liked the moment here and being familiar with their Indian cousins, to me it dosent appear that the two dogs in BKG are going for a hunt. I too would go for the crop suggesting more of the FG .

I like this a lot Rachel

it says everything about my favourite predator, the bonding and playful nature, and associated dust in the air, the fact they use the road frequently (like a lot of predators) to aid in hunting, also the fact that they are on the move also means they are on the hunt, knowing WD, that is their nature, they remind me of a gang of street thugs, kicking & disturbing things to see what stirs and then actively pursueing whatever pops up, I've seen them take on everything from a mongoose & scrub hare to Cape Buffalo.
Agree on a taking out some lower FG.

    TFS

I like the image, it looks like natural behavior to me albeit on a track. I don't think I would try to enhance clarity because it was indeed rather dusty. I like the natural looking colours.
