    Default Hippos Out of Water

I thought I would add to the species of herbivores being posted. We don't often see hippos out of water during the day but I saw quite a few in South Luangwa N.P., Zambia, including these 3. I hadn't noticed the pink and white feet before seeing these. Nothing I could do about the angle of shooting as we were on top of the steep riverbank with the hippos in riverbed below. Despite the fact that it was already getting warm and just after 8:30 a.m., these 3 stayed in the shallows of the sand bar rather than fully immersing in the deeper water.

    C&C welcome and appreciated. Thanks,

Quite a sweet capture Rachel and I like the fact the three youngsters are out of the water, but grouped. Is that an Ox Pecker on the back of the RH hippo?

I don't thing the amount of space above is working and perhaps as an option, going more 'pano' brings more focus. I also feel there is more detail and depth you can extract in both FG & BKG adding to the overall scene.

Thanks Steve, that looks good. I was worried about cropping too much more (as you know I don't like pixel bashing). Unfortunately placing them higher in frame wasn't possible due to the edge of the cliff/riverbank and additional hippos below. The pano works though. I think it is an oxpecker though not sure if red or yellow billed.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

I like both versions.. This is a very good image! Love the grouping of the hippos... Lighting wasn't the greatest but you handled it quite well Rachel.

Nice shot Rachel, I like the newly revealed white feet, never seen that before. I like the pano crop, and slightly darker tones, I think it brings more attention to the hippos.

Hi Rachel -- Very nice image and scene , i also never seen there feet or rather noticed that sort of colour diff. I am inclined towards Steve's RP , has certainly made the image much more pleasing.

Rachel can,t make up my mind re the cropping, like it both ways yours gives the viewer a better look of the general environment and Steve's concentrates more on the magnificent animals.

Both versions work, but I liked seeing the environment in the OP, it shows something different to the norm. Great to see all 3 hippos giving a good pose./

Hi Rachel, great view of the three youngsters, and I like that they are 'huddled' together. Detail looks great, as we can see the scratch marks on the closer youngster. I have never seen the whites/pinks on their feet before, and it looks like only their front feet. The pano version works best for me.

A sweet scene Rachel! Those feet are adorable.
I am fine with the original framing. I have yet to get to South Luangwa!
