    Hand held Canon 1DX Canon 100-400L IS @ 153mm ISO 25,600 1/1000 sec f9
Many of the images (apart from landscapes) were taken hand held when using the 100-400L IS, my logic was that there is a 4 stop stabiliser and I was usually using a fast shutter speed in relation to focal length. This proved especially useful when photographing larger mammals because there was always the need to reposition and on uneven ground there wasn't usually time to level the tripod. There was of course ample time to trip over the tripod when it got caught in tussocks and bushes!

All C&C welcome ( it was high ISO not a typo)

Hi Jon - Looks like you must have been pretty close to get a ff head shot at that focal length. This looks great for such a high ISO with plenty of detail retained (is that ISO of 25,600 correct?) I've found the IS on the new 100-400 to be great and the lens produces very sharp results. Nice choice on the dof too.

    TFS,
    Rachel

Thanks Rachel, yes the ISO was 25,600, I was pretty pleased with the result, I overexposed slightly to minimise noise at capture.

    ISO 25,600 1/1000 sec f9
And so, did the camera then promptly melt, explode, fall apart after taking the shot, NO, but did it deliver a useable file, of course. Nice one Jon.

Are you now converted to pushing the ISO to obtain the capture when required???? Imagine what the MKII delivers.

    TOLD YOU SO.

Thanks Steve, camera still working and entirely happy with it, I have been converted to high ISO for some time now in fact pretty much since I got it, hence the regular use of auto ISO.
Maybe consider 1DX MkIII when that comes along, presumably the sensor would be something similar to the 5D IV, now that would be some camera.

Rachel coming back to your comment regarding close, it is as you say very close, I confess I cannot remember precisely where it was taken but my guess would be at a bison road crossing, they came within touching distance of our hire car on a few occasions.

Fine portrait with great ISO performance from the 1DX.. Composition is quite good. BG comes into play a bit here and I know DOF for close portraits can be an issue but I might have shot wide open to better blur the BG and just make sure the eyes are sharp.. You seem to have had more than enough DOF @ F9. Very much a personal preference. All good here

Hi Jonathan -- This completely works for , great result at such high iso. nice choice on DOF but as Dale said a shallow DOF might have also worked here . All in all a very nice image .

    TFS !

Excellent portrait Jon, nice intense stare and good details. Never would have guessed the ISO for this one.
