    Default Merlin with prey

I took this Merlin with breakfast yesterday on Assateague Island National Seashore. It was just at sunrise so not much light. Shot on a monopod,
    1/640, f/8, auto ISO-640, +1.2/3 step, 700mm, 500 + 1.4X, D500.

I think not a Cooper's Hawk, but a Merlin! Beautiful composition with that neat snag, and although sad, great that you got the prey with open bill.

Thanks for the ID and the feedback. I changed it in the post. The rest of the sequence gets a bit gruseum but I may find one for this months theme.

yes it is a merlin and you got lucky to see her with prey. The image is a bit soft and noisy, was it a large crop?

Thanks for the feedback. Not a large crop and not much noise reduction either but I may have raised the exposure / shadows a bit too far in the first one without applying noise reduction. It was dawn and not much light. Here is one after sunrise.

    What a great find.
I like both images. I like the sky colors and sharpness in the second post but prefer the prey and light in the OP.
I would take some off the top to get a landscape orientation and a sliver more on RHS.

Awesome sighting you had! Gail basically took the words out of my mouth as far as critique goes.
