This is only the third individual Northern Pintail that I got the pleasure of photographing. It is also my first during non-winter months, therefore I got to use some green backgrounds this time around!

Canon 7DII + 500mm f/4 II + 1.4TC III, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/640s., f/5.6, ISO 1600, natural light, handheld (lying prone in the mucky water's edge), almost FF, some eye work, and NR to the BG and FG.

Excellent IQ Daniel. Not sure that it works as a portrait though with so much of the body in view. Almost like, oops I cut the tail off! Maybe crop back to just past the large brown feather, I tried it and feel it works better.

I love this elegant species. Before reading Colin's critique I had exactly the same thought: not enough body for a full body shot, but too much for a portrait. Would love to see a bit more crop, or the whole bird. Everything else is top notch.

ooo...this is nice! The BG is beautiful against that brown head.
POV confirms you live in a submarine!
As to the comp, strangely enough I like this. Normally I am not a fan of this much body and could certainly see a tighter crop as an option.
Love the water droplet on the forehead and the nice bow wave,
    Gail

Yes, I could see a tighter crop too and that would work really well, but wanted to include some of the cool speculum which I thought balanced out the composition.

What a beautiful shot. I love the water being pushed in front of the bird. I can't help you with the crop tighter or not. I'm still too much of an amateur to decide where to crop a birds parts off.

    Thanks for sharing,
    Marlo

I like the low angle, sharpness, sweet BG and composition. I can see why you chose this composition, that speculum color matches the BG perfectly. Excellent image Daniel.
