This young elk was photographed in the Lamar Valley Yellowstone, early morning not long after dawn.
I suppose in an ideal world the head would be turned more toward the camera but if that were the case I think it would have been partly in shadow.

That's very attractive Jonathan, bg, fg, subject and mood ....... does not bother me that it's looking away ..... and I would be happy with the color and tonal balance ...... different

Hi Jon - Nice cooler tones to this image with good detail. I like that one can see a bit more of the Lamar Valley. You handled the light and shadows well. For me the angle of the elk being away from the viewer and the camera sensor is a problem. It also seems to be a bit ahead of you which emphasizes the issue. Keep them coming though.

I have no real problem with the animal walking away, but I wonder in this case it might have more impact is the picture was a bit wider to give 'little one walking confidently into the great yonder' sort of effect.

The focus and the soft colours are so effective and complimentary.

Hi Jonathon -- I like the scene here , and nice details inspite of all the shadows . To me the head angle is not a problem infact it looks good with the raised head and the subject moving non-nonchalantly. It has a nice feel to it . .

It's right for me Jonathan looks like this baby is sniffing the air in it's new world, like all the colours in the foreground and Bg.

I like the light catching his face Jon,tis tricky about him facing slightly away, but for me the way the light is working on his face makes up for that slight away turn. Beyond that, the cool colour palette and the background really draw meit is a very nice shot Jon . It's also very interesting to hear the others opinions on this image due to that slight break in convention if you like of his/her angle to the sensor .

For me the image conveys a new guy to the world taking in his surroundings it's moving /emotional for me Jon,the orientation of the fawn( I am unsure of correct nomenclature probably fawn as I belive this elk is very closly related to our red deer) doesn't spoil this felling that your image gives me

    take care

Thanks for the feedback everyone, I thought the cooler tones were ok for this particular image.
I would imagine the youngster is a calf as the adults are referred to as the bull and cow respectively.

  10. Thanks Stuart Philpott thanked for this post
