    Default Red-fronted Coot

Back in June of 2015 we were extremely lucky to be in this particular wildlife preserve in Lima, Peru. There were numerous avian species and plenty of great vantage points. I was lucky to capture this image of a Red-fronted Coot climbing out of the water. C&C welcome.

    D4S, 1/1600s, f 7.1, ISO 1250, Gitzo tripod, Wimberley Gimbal head.

Removed some distracting grasses in cs6.

Very nice Geoffrey. A 'natural' looking image. The grasses fit so well with the bird and perch. The perch looks real good from it being dry at top, to wet below. Nice detail on the bird which 'pops' real well. Lovely POV

I agree Keith, we call then Moorhens, they called them Coots but they are both from the Rail family which includes "our" Coots and they are Swamp hens in other places, so they certainly "get about".......... I wonder what "our" Coots are called "over there"

always attractive birds and this image is no exception - and the feet, even more amazing when you see them in action

The thumbnail doesn't do this image justice.
Love the pose, the environment and the log.
I would like to see a bit more room all around if you have it but certainly nice as is.
I see a magenta cast on the log and would selectively correct it.

Very nice capture, Geoffrey. Gotta love those big feet, and the environment brings this up a notch. I agree it feels a little tight in the frame, but a handsome image.

I believe this is what my 2000 edition of Sibley refers to as a Common Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus). But to confuse the issue, in 2011 the IOC split this species from the Moorhen that resides in Europe, and it is now referred to as the Common Gallinule (Gallinula galeata). The Red-fronted Coot (Fulica rufifrons) is a different species that lives mostly in Chile and Argentina. All three, along with the American Coot, are in the family Rallidae. None of which detracts from this fine image.

Thanks everyone, and Gail I did tone down the lighter parts of the log and in the process it may have shifted the color a bit. Bill, thank you for the ID correction and the other detailed information.

    Geoffrey

PS, If one of the moderators reads this would you please correct the title to read: Common Gallinule.

    Thanks.
