    Default Flying Eastern Bluebird

Here is another frame from June of an Eastern Bluebird that I got flying across a field. The raised wing shots were all bad but this one I find interesting. From Negri Nepote Grasslands in New Jersey.

    Canon 7dii and Canon 500 f4 ii + 1.4x iii. ISO 640, F7.1, SS 1/3200. Tripod mounted.

Converted in DPP 4. Auto White Balance. In PS is cropped as square which I liked the most for this pose. Eye work, sharpened and applied noise reduction to background. Also toned down the blues by reducing the yellows, cyan and magenta in selective coloring.

An interesting shot Isaac, like it's perched but not! Excellent IQ too. Curious, why did you need to tone the blues down? Also not sure about the crop compared with 2x3 vertical.

This shot was taken early in the morning with strong direct sun. That tends to over saturate the blues and give them an unrealistic look. This is despite the fact that my exposure was spot on. Same thing often goes for reds. They are often over saturated in these conditions. Cropping is a funny thing. Many don't like square crops but I don't mind them sometimes. 2x3 for me does not work in this case as it is too tight and does not give the bird any room at all to fly into.

Isaac, very well exposed and processed, really sharpe and lovely colours

a difficult to get shot, but for me I just find it's position awkward and unattractive ....... but just my view

I like the colours and feather detail. Bird looks nice against the BG colour. If the bird was looking towards us I reckon it would make the crop easier to handle.

Funny I like the position of the bird because it is different and not the typical in flight shot. Honestly not sure I have seen an in flight shot of a passerine like this before. But I appreciate the feedback and differing opinions. It is what makes this site so great.

just my feeling Isaac, somehow I just feel it's a bit un-natural to see a bird in the air without seeing it's wings "moving" or at least in a position

but a good image and my comments aren't in any way mean't to be negative

Not taken as negative in any way. I very much like hearing other peoples opinions and critiques, especially the critical ones. It helps me learn.

As an ecologist I find pics like this really interesting and informative. Many bird species fly with bursts of wing action followed by wings folded and it's great to see that part captured. It's also intriguing why the bird is in a vertical position during presumably horizontal flight.

Bird was coming in for a landing and was flying up to a perch. So this pic is of it flying up and going vertical before it landed. Hope that helps.
