    Default Wild Dog Vista

Taken in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia on my recent trip. This wild dog paused very briefly to survey the Luangwa river from above. I wish the far riverbank edge did not intersect the head but I didn't notice it at the time. We missed their pre-dawn kill but it was obvious from all the red on the faces that they had made one.

Hi Rache, a clean and simple portrait of a Wild Dog.

I wish the far riverbank edge did not intersect the head but I didn't notice it at the time.
Interesting POV, as I find it's the vegetation in front of the WD more distracting than the riverbank line running through the head. Personally I might tone down the bright stick on the RHS and selectively drop the white in the tail to bring back a hint more tone so it's less bright (not by much), but that's me. Techs look good and the DoF has provided the nice, subtle separation needed between BKG & subject. No idea if the is cropped or FF, but I was wondering about an alternative crop - i.e. moving the whole crop up so you loose the brighter part of the sand, but then have more sky too, so the WD is lower in frame?

    TFS
    Steve

Hi Rachel -- I like the WD gazing into tht negative space and lovely patterns on its body . Tht intersection of its head with the river bank is something we normally cant avoid in most of the situations , so I am ok with it . Some real nit picking by Steve but I too find his alternate crop suggestion quite interesting , I think inclusion of the sky will provide another dimension to the whole image . A nice image though .

    TFS !

I like the sense of place here and the pleasing light & colours Rachel.
I don't mind the "intersecting" riverbank as it's nicely OOF - I do wonder about the "leveling" as the perceived line of the riverbank on the opposite side. I can see you leveled based on the dog's legs/feet which is fine, but I would like to see the effect of leveling based on the OOF riverbank and how it affects the dynamic of the images as viewed? Hope it makes sense how I typed it up :)

Hi Rachel i really like this one , a classy portrait in the landscape .
I like the wide view , nice separation to the BG and the warm tone and colors .
Regarding the crop i agree with Steve , likewise the more " distracting " plants in front of the head rather than the bank .
    Nice one !!!!

Hi Guys - Thanks very much for the comments and suggestions. This is ff ( I always say if I cropped) so no more sky above. Interesting about the vegetation because it didn't stick out to me at all, just part of the bg.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

    Hi Rachel,
I like seeing the dog in his environment - telling the full story - but still separated by the DOF. The patterns on the dog look great and I do like that alert pose, the bloodied face and the full belly.

The OOF background elements don't both me, but maybe there is a case for knocking them back a little.

    Best wishes, Gerald

    Hello Rachel,
I am enjoying this a lot

First of all, the subject stands out so beautifully in this frame. Great pose from the WD, he seems to have stopped in its tracks to look and listen. HA, ears pointing forward and mouth slightly open tells me he is intrigued by something:)

I like the space and environment around this lovely chap. In terms of crop, I am tempted to remove a tad from the bottom to see if a more pano look works better. I like the sky and vegetation, the greens behind the subject's head do not bother me one bit.

Beautiful light and colours, great IQ, a very well processed frame overall as I would expect from you:)

Rachel, I spoke to a tourist in the Pharmacy who saw wild dogs in the nearby Game Reserve at 10 am this morning. I was quite jealous. He showed me the photos he had taken, some reminded me of your WD posts some time ago. A few individuals came close and sniffled around his vehicle, two pups were playing with a stick in the middle of the road. I think I will pay a visit to the Park on Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning, not sure I will get lucky but worth a try...

Thank you so much for sharing, my friend.

Wishing you a lovely and relaxing week-end, I will be back with more comments and if time allows, hopefully an image or two.

    Warmest regards,
    Gabriela Plesea
