Tswalu also has some habituated meerkats which means that one can walk or sit among them to take photos. On this particular day the alpha female had just given birth and the mob spent some time running off another female adult. This one climbed to the top of a bush to get a better look around.

Hi Rachel -- Nicely perched and very nicely framed . I liked the inquisitive look on the meerkat . Looks nice and sharp .

I find the back ( center area ) a bit high on contrast for my liking, but all in all it is a fine image .

    TFS !

Hi Rachel, love these guys. A typical upright stance, and even on top of a bush. Nice and sharp, and love the dirt on the nose. I do like the mixture of blues and browns in the BG.

Love the fact you're shooting upwards here - I've never seen a wild Meerkat, but I always imagine them going for high viewpoints, so this shows that behaviour off well.

Great stare from the Kat, not sure if you'd be able to slightly lighten the right eye (as we look) whilst keeping a natural feel to the shot.

Cool opportunity, Rachel! I like the light and the pose, agree perhaps taming BG highlights will make the meerkat pop some more?
It does seem like it's about to keel over, perhaps a CW rotation would help? To at least get the posture more upright and the eyes on more-or-less the same horizontal plane?

Thanks Morkel. It was precariously perched on the top of the bush/branches and I wanted to retain that feeling/look.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

Hi Rachel, the shooting angle is OK and not too steep. Like the look back pose, but agree on taming the white a fraction, I think you could afford to just drop the exp a fraction. I feel if you lighten the right eye it will throw the shadow lighting out and would look wrong overall.

Nice to see you did not apply any Lumo adjustment here, colours look good and I like the fact the lighter area is behind the head with the patch of blue.

    Hello Rachel,

I just love the POV here

Wonderful capture, nice techs in the field, IMO this is well exposed and the colours are great.
I cannot think of anything I would change here, and I would certainly not interfere with the subject's Left eye - it is visible enough for me (also, Steve once told me to always respect the light and shadows for that natural look and feel)

Very cute and that knowing look from this busy body is so precious, love the bits of soil in her nostrils which tell me she's been foraging for a while:)

Well captured and processed Rachel,so nice to know you had encounters with Meerkats - I love the species and I bet they were so entertaining, glad I opened this thumbnail, it gave me so much joy!

Hope to see more from your trip, I will be back tomorrow...

    Warmest regards,
    Gabriela Plesea
