I like the color palette very much and how the bird stands out against the brown tones of the water. Details look pretty good as well. Looks like you were not shooting at an optimal sun angle and thus have some very strong shadows here. I think the bird could use a little more contrast to stand out even more from the background. I guess that may worsen the shadow so not sure it would work.

Nice species here, and good to see some of the legs. Colours look great. Although light angle could have been more frontal, it still works for me here. I like the streaks of water reflecting on the shaded part of the body. The black element in the water does not add anything to the image - I wish it was not there. I also feel the comp would have been strengthened had you pointed your lens down a couple of inches. Good job on the whites and the sharpness.

I wished the sun was coming over my general area instead of mostly from the side. I was aiming at the eye with the center point. I see your point with a little more foreground.

I went for more contrast but it was as you suspected.
