The struggle was real, the effort valiant, and it was surely not painless, but in the end the underdog did indeed succumb to defeat. What we are seeing here is the frog pushing away, with its legs, from being swallowed.

Canon 7DII + 500mm f/4 II + 1.4TC III, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/1250s., f/8, ISO 800, natural light, handheld, just about FF. Light was getting harsh, following was done to help: contrast reduced, rock toned down, shadows on heron lightened.

    Dan,
Nice job at handling the harsh light and grabbing the action. I would like to see a vertical crop on this highlighting the action.
The foot on the left and the OOF rock on the right doesn't really add to the story IMO.

Excellent timing with all the action going on around the frame. Makes a really refreshing change from single bird portraits. Tough conditions nicely handled.

I like it as presented. In cases like this, I am always rooting for the predator. Did you go to ISO 800 for the extra d-o-f?

    Thanks guys.

Artie, in part, yes. I often leave it at ISO 800 for additional speed with these herons to freeze the potential hunting action and "fish flips" before the swallow.

What an excellent capture Daniel! I like the way the heron is presented – part of its leg, part of its head. Shows sow little and yet so much.

great action drama and color! So which one was the defeated underdog? I used to watch the underdog cartoon when i grew up in the 1970s, and he always proclaimed he was not a Bird, a plane, or even a Frog! lol
