No need to explain why this species fits the theme for the month, thought I would join Rachel in posting one of the most critically endangered mammals that roam Southern Africa.
Location will be obvious to those who've been...

A really old boy, hope he's still trudging around there - lots of reports of huge surges in poaching of late
Will scope out the impact when I return end of October...

The mound in front of him is a rhino midden, they return to defecate in the same spot, which is why it's so easy for poachers to know where they are likely to be!

    Techs:
    Nikon D3s
    Nikkor 500mm f4 VR-II
    f8.0 | 1/800 SS | ISO-400
Pretty close to full frame, cropped some off the bottom to remove an OOF band of earth

Hi Morkel - Nice look at the old guy with good textures and detail brought out. I wish the zebra wasn't intersecting the body. I'm seeing a halo around the rhino, most evident along the rump and legs. I too hope he is ok. Did they remove his horn to thwart poachers?

    TFS,
    Rachel

A very nice proud old unit. Nice separation from the BG animals despite the intersection. Situation is grim for our one horned rhinos too!

Proud indeed Morkel, with this battle scared old boy, agree on the intersecting zebra, but you've done well with the lighting and comp BG overall.

Hi Morkel -- The feeling is always a mixed one when I see a Rhino image , they are such amazing creatures but their plight makes me deeply saddened. You have done a very good job with this image, bringing out nice details and colours in the scene . Agree on that intersecting Zebra , but a very nice image .

    TFS !

    Hello Morkel,

This thumbnail jumped at me straight away and I took great pleasure seeing an old and very dignified rhino alive and well - I like this, very much.

Lovely colours and some nice separation between subject and BG, nice POV, don't think the zebra bothers me that much as the rhino stands out beautifully.
Lovely detail and a well processed image overall, thank you so much Morkel, enjoyed viewing

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea
