This is a female lazuli bunting with a grasshopper. It appears she has removed its wings and legs - I have not read of this behavior before.Equipment was Canon Xti, 400mmf5.6 lens, 20 mm extension tube.My cameral pretty much lives with the exension tube when I'm trying to photograph small songbirds. Not sure if this is standard procedur but it does allow me to get closer.
Hi Dave Yes the use of extension tubes will allow you to get closer but will affect the AF speed and focus at infinity. Nothing wrong with using them if you are within minimum focusing range. If not I would not use them.
Might want to experiment with a 1.4X converter You would need to focus manually but the lens would become an 840 mm lens !!!! At that magnification you would want to use it in a tripod,
For this image I would like to have seen you line up with your sun angle, light was from the left so the right side is in shadows. Fill flash would help but best to go with your good angle. As presented the one stick running on the left side of the body is distracting. Don't mind the bg and could even blur the bg just a bit more sitll keeping it natural looking !!!! I like the pose with meal and the good placement in frame !!!
