This image was made (with encouragement and suggestions from Gerry van der Walt) in the Mara on Wild-eye safari this Sept. The image was overexposed by 3 stops and the remaining color removed by desaturatiing in HSL

Interesting treatment here Doug and good to see something different from you,

however both don't quite work for me due to the lion comp, the first is fairly static head down pose and the second is lost by the direct overhead shadow from the sun.

Edit: looks like the 2nd image has been removed?

Hi Doug - good to see you starting to post some photos from your long trek to Africa.
I hope we'll see some more from the Mara and Mana Pools...

I like the approach (as you would know, we often encourage this kind of shooting in harsh light to see if something interesting can be conjured up). I do agree with Marc that the lion's pose could have been just a bit more dynamic and distinct, especially given the wide angle of view. I personally love this kind of high key look on the open plains of the Mara, but for many it would probably be a "Marmite" shot as they say.

Do remember to try and post at least 5 critiques for every image you post on the forum?
