    Default Lesser Yellowlegs

    Attached Images Attached Images

Got to Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge the other evening to get some late evening shots of shorebirds in. This juvenile Lesser Yellowlegs was shy at first but eventually walked right up to me over and over again. Shot taken very close to sun set.

Canon 7dii and Canon 500 f4 ii + 1.4x iii. ISO 640, F8, SS 1/2500. Tripod mounted while lying in the mud

Converted in DPP. Auto White Balance. In PS I cropped and added a bit of canvas to the top and to the right. Adjusted for contrast, color and highlights/shadows. Sharpened and applied noise reduction to background. At the end I cropped off about half of the canvas that I added.

The lighting is perfect for this type of shooting Strong, but with some nice color and warmth. The all important head and eye are razor sharp and I like the varied Bg. I don't mind that the DOF falls off a bit, but a complete profile shot would have been nice too. Very nice capture

    Great POV and beautiful light.
Good IQ and the whites look good.
Do you have a frame with a foot visible?
You could consider cloning out the second catch light in the eye but fine as is.
    Very nice!

Similar to Gails comment, I like just about everything about this shot other than the foot position. If you have a similar shot with a bit more of a dynamic walking pose it'd e much stronger.

Everything else I like, the low angle and the light and especially that graduated BG.

Nice, simple shot of a handsome bird in good light. Yellowlegs offer so many leg positions that this is not my favorite, and I'm sure you got other frames; but a handsome shot nonetheless.

Thanks for the comments guys. I have many shots of this bird in different positions. Funny I like the simplicity of this shot and chose to post this one because it just shows the bird and the light which was my goal. But I totally understand the point that it is just a basic portrait and not a more interesting pose. I may post another with a more different pose. Thanks for the comments. I always learn from them.

Hard to beat the north end on an evening with perfect blue skies. Not a soul left on the pond but you and the birds. Hard to believe that does not make it into some book about things you must do in NYC!
