    Default Red-throated Loon

    I took this in Iceland.

    SS1/2500 f 5.6 ISO 1250
90% full frame with a bit off the bottom
I really struggled getting the right exposure for these birds. The whites on the underwing and belly are so bright that I blew the whites on most of the flight shots where the wings are up. Of course, by the time I figured it out I only got one or two more chances at a flight shot.
PP: reduced the exposure by 0.5, usual LR 5 sliders, NR to BG, cloned in one small area where the whites were blown on the belly, levels and USM to JPEG.
Comments and critiques always appreciated and learned from with thanks,
    Gail

Beautiful bird, nicely shown... love the wings down, head down flying position. Wonderful out of focus background of vegetation and the reflection. Thank you for sharing, Gail.

I love the left to right curve along the top of the loon. The drops falling off the feet are pretty darn cool too. If mine I'd try to lighten the darker area of the wavelet near the wingtip. Super nice all around!

Gail, This is a nice low angle shot over the water of a very hard subject to get in-flight, the only thing that kind of looks strange to me is
how much the shadow on the body from the wing has been lightened up. It has a sharp line so the shadow had to have been much darker.
I would much rather see it more natural that way. Other than that, very nice.

Hi Gail, congrats on this beautiful red-throated diver flying parallel to you. I love the position of the wings, the colors of the water, the rusty chest, and the sweet BG. The clasped feet are a bonus! I looked at my images and your shadow at the belly line does not look "lightened" as Tim points out. However, only you can comment. That surely was a magical evening. Wonderful work.

very nice pose with the curved wing and interesting wing position. Good details, I wish you had caught him just a fraction of second earlier when he was flying towards you

Thank you all for your comments.
Tim, I did nothing to the shadow line other than an overall REDUCTION of exposure to the entire image by -.5 in LR.

Thanks for the info Gail, for some reason it just looks a bit strange to me, my mistake.
