Wow ! To me, it's like you're very close to there. If you want to see what's "there's a long way to go", you should see my swallow flight shots. Of course you won't because they're so bad that I dare not post them here :o
Yours at least looks sharp, good wing position IMO. Just have to lighten some shadow areas.
Desmond, I suspect you are being too modest. I have admired your photos very much. The background is water.
Oscar, I'll try using dfine on it to reduce the noise, but I think it is probably due to dodging and burning the head area.
The wing position looks great but it would have helped a lot if the sun would have been behind you and with this kind of BG you need to dial in positive exposure compensation, +1 or so. Keep trying!
Axel is right (of course!) If I had had the light behind me, exposure would have been simplified, for then I wouldn't have highlights on the top of the head and the rest of the bird in shadows.
So I'm learning, but sometimes even the things I know don't sink in! Senior processing problems.
Thanks all for looking and commenting. I appreciate your taking time to help.
Hi Kent If you can do post the exposure compensation used and if it was made in manual how was the exposure derived Does make a huge difference in being able to help you
As presented the image is underexposed. Trying to fix it in PS will bring out sever noise since it is a dark bird. With whites you can get away with a lot !!! The bg looks pleasing but the bird dark so I assume it was off sun angle. I do like the pose and sharpness!!!!
You are exactly right (as usual!). the sun angle was to the left and slightly behind the bird. The noise is a result of trying to fix things in PS. You are soooo good! Thanks for all the help from everyone. This is site rules!
