As soon as I saw the heron perched backlit against a dark background I knew that this is the image I wanted as a final result. Exposing for the highlights meant rendering the already dark background as a black canvas. Most of the heron was rather dark too, but I did deepen some of those to match my vision for the image. I wanted to include the full legs and perch but could not back up as I was at the edge of some dense bushes...and the heron got chased away by another before I had the chance to change lenses.Canon 7DII + 500mm f/4 II + 1.4TC III, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/1250s., f/8, ISO 800, natural light, handheld, full-frame (but I could add a touch at right), warmed up the WB to taste.
This is good Daniel. I love black BG. Makes the image so dramatic.
My only suggestion would be to decrease the brightness of the feathers on the forehead as well as the wispy single feathers on the left hand side of the body.
I like this comp but your idea of a sliver more on the right would work as well. All to taste really for this type of image.
TFS something different,
Gail
Hey Dan, I am not keen on this one but for the life of me I cannot figure out why... Perhaps I expected something even more dramatic...

I love the idea of trying something different. Comp works fine for me, but I'd give Gail's suggestions a try. The several brightest feathers on forehead and back pull my attention from the overall.
