Size: 124.3 KBThe early afternoon sun was pretty high in the sky for this shot. The active focus point was on the lit up feathers of the right wing, which probably put it in the hyperlocal range (I may not be wording that right but I think I understand the concept), hence the decent focus bill tip to tail tip. The redness of the iron stain these birds pick up when feeding in the iron rich muds of Wrangell Is. in the Arctic Ocean gave it the colour on the face. 7DII,EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 IS MII, ISO200,f/8, 1/1250, HH, cropped to 33% of original pixels.

I like the landing pose with the dangling webbed feet, good wing position. The head is sharp. The man made wall in the BG is distracting. Side light was tough to handle here, looks like you had to raise the shaded areas and the subsequent heavy application of noise reduction in the shaded areas has rubbed the bird from any feather details and gave it a smooth plastic look in those areas

Thank you Arash--you're comments were tremendously helpful, although there's not much to be done about the fence (I stumbled on these birds grassing up on a soccer field in a residential area of Richmond as I was driving out to the Terra Nova marshes to look for them). I used Topaz NR on the original image--too much I see now. On this repost I just used the NR in Aperture's RAW processing and then curves to bring up the lighting on the breast and feet. repost is much better Bob, you may want to still run the NR on the BG but not the bird. Mask the bird, put it on its own layer and then run NR on the BG. With the 7D2 optimal processing is key to get the best quality images. do you have the PP guide. all of this is covered there
