Default Least tern - early day

I don't usually use flash as main light, but today I got very early to the terns and tried to take an advantage of the moment. Le's see what you think.

    Lornat:

excellent POV, good pose, very effective dof.

I often use flash when photographing loons, but they have the same issue as your tern, very easy to overdo the effect on the whites. They aren't blown here, but the brightness is uneven, and makes it look a bit flashed. The ideal situation is when people aren't sure you used flash or not!

I selected the highlights on the breast, and used a 60% multiply layer to tone them down. You certainly can do a better job on the original file, but I hope the idea comes across.

    Cheers

Hi Lorant. A nice look at this lovely Tern. Good pose and great low POV. I didn't immediately notice the over-flashed breast, but I agree that Randy's repost is an improvement.

Yes the repost by Randy is an improvement for the whites on breast.
However I really like the original agreeing that depth of field and pov make this a lovely image.

I love the pose, low angle and lighting here. I think the issue with the breast isn't due to flash per se, but that part of the whites are overexposed while immediately surrounding areas have gone gray. Smoother gradations in the lightest areas should be addressable in raw conversion.
