After photographing this large puma dining on a fresh guano kill, she decided to move off the kill, and head out to rest and digest here full belly. Note the bloody stain on her face..... It was a heart thumper as she approach straight on, as she determined what direction she would head off on.. Canon's 100-400mm II 7DMKII locked on and tracked her right until she broke off and went left. Left a lot of canvas here to depict the immense size of the patagonia's pampa. The hues and colors .... are as i shot them.. Iso 2000 1/1600 sec, f 6.3 man. custom white balance. .. Can't wait to share chilean's fauna, and landscape next year with the group.

Hi Don - Nice to see you back and posting in Wildlife. I like the walking at you pose and off-center position of the puma in frame. I do wish either the whole plant at the bottom was in or none of it. If it were mine I might go with a bit less contrast. I am not familiar with the area but there appears to be a reddish cast to both the cat and the surroundings? Looking forward to seeing more.

    TFS,
    Rachel

Hi Don -- Wow ! what a look ! I love this cat they look incredible . You have got a lovely head-on view of the subject and nicely framed . I too see a lot of reddish cast in the image and the plant / grass in the FG are a bit distracting but nonetheless i would love to have this image in my collection .

    TFS !

    Dear Don,

I think you got something really special here, many thanks for sharing!

I like the placement of the subject in the frame and eye contact is superb. The bushes in the FG are unfortunate, but such is Nature:)

Since you shot at ISO 2000 and customised the WB, I take it the light was not quite favourable? Overall the frame appears a bit too warm IMO, me thinking a slight drop in temperature in LR might make things look a bit more natural?

I took the liberty to make a few adjustments, reduced warmth by just a tad and did some extra sharpening on this lovely puma, something tells me his (or her) coat is quite red so I did not interfere much with the colours.
What a beauty, you are so fortunate to have been able to see and capture this on camera, VWD!!! I took great pleasure viewing, kindly let us see more if you have

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

Killer image not often you can get wild Puma images. I see the red cast all you need to do is bring it into PS use the color balance adjustment and pull the top slider toward the right about to -12.

Hi Don, nice to see you here and a cool sighting in the wild.

I very much like the position in frame, but agree, the OOF grass is a distraction and perhaps something you may wish to look at if you have time, as some 'gardening' would clearly provide more focus on the subject. Not sure which Case function you set, but remember, as the subject gets closer both you and your lens has to work harder & faster and so a rapid rate may not be help here too, coupled with the Case setting. I think your DOF was about right, perhaps f/8, but personal choice, but again, the closer you are, the more DOF needed.

In terms of overall colour, whichever route you choose, I certainly would reduce the Saturation, and any Contrast and refine then the colours more. I have gone more 'cooler' but it has also brought some more detail out, the WB is personal, however, overall I think there is more you can extract from the RAW. 1/1600 I feel was on the edge, would like more SS as he/she was on the move, but unsure how far you can push the ISO on the 7D MK2.

Crudely done Don, but hope this illustrates my thinking and a direction on the image.

    Hope to see more.

    TFS
    Steve

Hi Don ..... this is a absolute killer frame from the pure sightings POV ... to get a Cougar in that way ... simply stunning
I like the overall comp and the approaching cat ... head on view .
As color and tone/ contrast is up to personal taste .... i think your OP is a bit " off" for my taste .... i would think Steve is on the " right " route , but this is for sure personal pref .

    Hi Don

    Killer moment captured!
    Agree with above comments.
Do you custom the WB in camera, or PP in LR?
    Regards

    Andre.

Hey Don - wanted to comment earlier but I was traveling for work and the laptop screen was not doing image critique any favours when it comes to colour.
I like the low angle and pose, and placement of the puma. I agree with the distracting placement of the shrubs/bushes/grass (not much you could probably do except change your own positioning?), and prefer the colour of Steve's last RP.
Looking forward to more of this amazing big cat!
