    Default Mother mallard

    Name: Mother mallard portrait. 044.jpg
Views: 58
Size: 283.3 KBThis mallard hen must be the champion of mother ducks. She resides on a pond in front of our municipal building complex in Delta, B.C. She started the nesting season with 11 ducklings and despite living in an area replete with blue herons, eagles, hawks, harriers, dogs, cats, and little boys she has raised all 11 to the feathered stage. This shot, for me, portrays a lovely matronly dignity and aplomb. 7DII, EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 IS MII @ 350mm, ISO 640, f/5.6, 1/400, HH

Sharp where it needs to be with a good EXP. For me it is borderline too-big-in-the frame; do you have more room all around?

    Do you know about nest-dumping?

I can appreciate your POV re: framing Arthur but, a rarity for me, I only shot this one exposure and this is full frame. I think I was too focused on shooting the babies and failed to take advantage of the opportunity to sit so close to Mom while she oversaw her brood.. I was aware of the concept of nest-dumping, although I'd never seen it so described.I don't know what happened here but however she got those 11 ducklings, she got them all through to being almost ready to start flying lessons.

As for the framing, that's why God made zoom lenses. As for nest-dumping, I am referring to other hens laying eggs in the nest of another. It is the only term I have ever heard used to describe that behavior. Good on her doing so well with the brood.
