Default The chase2 - Tern vs. Stilt

I was out photographing today. Here is my favorite one from the day....this female stilt came too close to the tern nest again and got the well deserved treatment.

Very nicely caught, was this a large crop? Great exposure but I sense there is a sharpening halo, more apparent on the stilt.

Terrific capture, Lorant. To get them both in the frame, sharp, and squawking at each other is enough of a challenge. Their extended wing and tail positions are great. As for the halo Jonathan refers to, it may not be due to sharpening, but with some blue skys and black or dark feathers, a halo is possible. Note the lack of halo around white edges, pink legs and feet of the Stilt.

How cool is that behaviour you got! I love the poses, but especially the tern's as it looks like an aggressive banking manoeuvre. Good comp. I'd remove the small detached white spot near the stilt's far wing tip. Looks like you may have cropped to maximum limit before too much of an IQ loss - but looks OK as posted.

Wow! That's a great interaction you've captured. Terrific flight positions and open beaks on both birds. It may be a large crop but you have detail where it matters: catchlights in both eyes, the red in the Stilt's eye, nice definition on the Tern. I'd be thrilled to have caught this.

What a wonderful capture, with both appearing sharp. In this case, my initial reaction was to like the choice of crop/framing, as the action is so dynamic. But if I cover your signature, I would be inclined to remove a little from the left and add to the right. Just a little.

Great interaction between the birds, and I like the detail. Very nice image Lorant.

Two amazing poses and both birds sharp. I would love to see what the full frame un-cropped original looks like. a

ps: where, and what species of tern?

    Thank you guys for commenting.

Artie, here is the original frame. It is a Least Tern that chases the Black Necked Stilt.

Thanks Lorant, I had no idea that those two species were so close in size. That is one huge crop; thus the poor image quality with the coarse look and virtually no feather detail. But still striking for web presentation. a

It's great chase and you got both sharp but the crop is just too big to make this a keeper for avian. It's a great record shot though

@Artie it's a least tern so almost exactly the same size as the stilt.

That's a shock to me as without seeing them close together I would have assumed that the stilt would be much larger... a

Thanks for all these great comments and constructive critics. I will have to get closer to actions like that. I am working on it and will keep practicing.

Nice action captured but as you stated, you need to get closer. I don't think a least tern is anywhere near as big as a stilt so I think it is just the angle that makes them look similar. Keep shooting
