Young silver gull. I opted to keep the BG in this one. I never seem to have the right lens on the camera.

    In ACR - Highlights -30, Shadows +16
In PSCS6 - Curves adjustment layer and a play with Nik Dfine 2. Smart sharpened for posting.

Glennie, I think the choice of lens is perfect here. I really like how this picture put sea gull in context. This is a new gull species for me so that also adds more interest. You've captured the whites really well. Focus is also spot on. I think you could use a little bit CW rotation but this might just be illusion from the angled waves and bird. Very nicely done. This is probably one of the best sea gull pictured in its habitat that I have seen.

Thank you Adhika! That's quite a compliment. I looked at the horizon line too. I ended up rotating slightly to level with the small headland (big rock, really). There were pretty big waves after the storm had passed. Now that I have posted it, I can see a funny mark in the sky, like an elongated dust bunny.

Very nice BIF capture, Glennie!!! Seems spot-on for focus. I like how there seems to be some translucence through the wing feathers at their tips ....

    Hoping there is more!

p.s. Did you get any pics of the storm's waves in action? Big waves always interest me (ex-surfer here) .....

Hm, can't see it from here but are you sure it's not the clouds?

Andrew, I have lots of images of the big waves. But if I was any sort of photographer I would be posting them here. Although I think I will just for the exercise and maybe understand how I can capture a better frame. White clouds against the rooster tails (so detail not showing). Overexposed highlights, and the composition really threw me. I spent my teenage years on the surf beaches of the Sunshine Coast...and met my husband in the surf at Coolum Beach. A surfer's girlfriend! OMG. Such a long time ago.

Adhika, yep. I can still see it on the LHS top cornerish. Maybe a hair?

A fine image Glennie---the seagull and the surf go together beautifully. You've really captured well the luminous translucence of the wing feathers. Seagulls are an under-rated and under appreciated BIF resource. They can be challenging to get the right exposure but really beautiful when you get it right. You've inspired me to go seagull shooting today after a Father's Day lunch on the waterfront. I'm wondering though if you may have overdone NR here. The main whites of the body look a bit waxy. I've been trying to achieve the almost jewel-like quality of most of the images by the really top people on the Avian Forum with only the rare success so far and I think NR may be one of the keys but it's very easy to overdue it so that the image takes on a waxy appearance. On the subject of waves, I got some nice shots down at Cabo last year so maybe I'll put one up on a thread here. Waves are like a field or garden of flowers---once you start shooting them it's hard to stop and before you know it you've got 400 images on your chip.

This is wonderful!! The bird is in a lovely pose and sharp, and the BG fits perfectly!! NR can be a big part of a perfect image, and is one of the holy grails in this sport.

Now I can see the dust bunny -- ones like that often can be blown off. I need to finish the revision of an old tutorial on it. Check my web site tutorial page -- I'll try to get back to it soon.

Bob - Thank you. I am very happy that I have inspired you to shoot sea gulls. They may be plentiful, so certainly good practice. With the regard to the NR. I always run a NR over the BG, but I usually mask out the bird. With this one, there was a little noise on the bird, so did a separate reduced NR on him. So, yes, maybe overdone. I seem to get a lot of noise in images with the higher ISOs.

Diane - Thank you. I'll check your website for the dust bunny. I have noticed that from our recent trip to the coast, where the 90 klm wind was whipping the sand around, I have a few more than when I left home.
