    Default Egyptian Goose portrait

Finally got round to treating myself to a (new to me!) 1dx, so I thought I'd put one up as it's the first one I've processed with it. Simple PP, just DPP4 with NR as per Artie and Arash's guide. I wanted to jump straight in at the deep end so I stood back a bit and pushed the ISOP higher than I'm used to to get a feel for what it's capable of, so this is about 1/2 the original frame at ISO 4000. Please can you let me know if there's anything glaringly wrong with the processing. The shot itself isn't anything spectacular, just wanted a test on an easy subject as the weather was rubbish for trying flight shots.

Spot on Mike the bird looks first class feather detail is great, being slightly picky I may destructure or blur the background a little and possible reduce the contrast slightly. Now your dancin!

Hi Mike, good to get some test shots under your belt, but ISO 4000 isn't high at all for the 1DX, but a camera suitable for the crap weather we have over here, unlike the warm golden light of the US .

I would just pull back the sharpening a fraction, as for me, the plumage on the back of the neck is looking a bit spiky. I would also look to getting a bit more tonal depth in the bill.

    Enjoy your new toy.

    Mike:

I find the lighting on the bird very flattering, the softness helped a lot. I appreciate Steve's point about the sharpening, and in photoshop I would refine my mask a bit to shrink the edges of your mask to feather out the sharpening on those exposed feather ends against the green bg. I know you didn't do photoshop here, but it would be an easy fix if you wanted to go there.

It appears that your original exposure was spot on, as you have retained good detail despite the ISO.

    Cheers

Hi Mike, excellent detail and the result with the high ISO looks great - nice clean eye. I agree with some NR on the BG.

    Congrats on your new toy.

BTW - we have these guys a dime a dozen at most wetlands where we photograph - noisy characters.
