    Default Skimmer in Flight

Black Skimmers, as an adaptation to their feeding method, are so out of proportion with the tiny legs, extremely long wings, crazy beak, etc to make images of them in any non-flight position troubling to me. When in flight and while feeding they are graceful and quite unique. To keep from dipping their wings in the water they never drop their wings past a certain point, so there are fewer wing positions to capture. Their wings are so long that the capture of a bird in flight coming toward you (without clipping ) practically needs a panaramic view. This image caught the bird in a diagonal position.

Very nice pose and eye contact. I'm a big fan of skimmers, it really is interesting to see their flight pattern and skimming.

The bird needs more sharpening as it looks quite soft and more room to fly into. Thanks for sharing!

    HI Williams,

This image looks out of focus in my monitor. The crop looks too tight in the frame and I wish the beak was not touching the wing.

    Keep trying Williams.

    Default thanks Axel

Axel :the concept of "more room to fly into" is will be very helpful when I crop in flight images in the future. I didn't sharpen it much, I'll try some more.
Maxis, yes, I noticed the beak position as well, and promptly forgot about it. Thanks for reminding me, These birds don't take positioning suggestions very well. Also It could be that my monitor makes it look sharper than it really is.

That could be a good reason Williams. What are you using? If you need help processing your images, the Digital Photography Workflow is the place to ask. We can help!

Here is a quick rework. I added more canvas and sharpened some more.

Default Axel, boy you are quick!

Thanks for the repost, I like it alot. I was just in the other room at my main computer, had expanded the crop, did some sharpening, sat wondering if there was something I could do with beak position, came back in here, and you already had it complete and looking far better than I could. Thank you.
