These are about on their last legs- making way for the Small Pearls, but its been a funny old year so far.
I tried something different again. Used an adjustment layer to drop the saturation on the background only.
I wanted the "busy" bg to show where they usually bask, or feed on Bugle.

    About 80% of frame.
Neat image/ layers adj in Paint shop pro.

    Minimal highlight removal in background.

The butterfly is good and sharp and I like the colours. I have done similar things with the background but it can easily be overdone having a slightly smudged/blurred/fuzzy effect. In a perfect world your bugle would have been more isolated but this is life.

Looks about the same to me.
Still prefer the first one but nothing to get exited about. One can keep messing till the cows come home and as you say its what I like that really matters(and the publisher !)

    Hi John,
beautiful butterfly well captured - it pops against the muted BG (although as you mention a bit busy).

Hi John, your strategy worked well, the butterfly really stands out from it's BG. These critters hardly ever seem to sit still, let alone spread their wings so nicely for you. Well captured!
You might want to try a closer crop, my eye seems to be drawn away from the butterfly towards the big OOF leaf right next to it on the left.
