Thought I would post something kind of different and funny. This was taken last year at La Jolla cove. This is a California brown Pelican in full breeding plumage doing a crazy behavior they perform to stretch out their pouch, at least that's what a biologist that studies pelicans has told us. He said that he occasionally sees this behavior but it is rarely captured so he was happy to see this frame.
Looks like he swallowed a brain to me. Hope you find it interesting, or at least funny.

Thanks as always for looking and for your input. I appreciate it.

    Dear David,
This Pelican truly stands out beautifully against the BG. Superb work, such a strong image and very printable IMO, great fun too, at the same time I cannot help noticing how well it was processed and presented: detail is stunning and colours are to die for. Those feathers look like hairs! Love the behavioural aspect captured, in terms of techs this frame is as good as it gets...

You humble me David, thank you so much for sharing, I will have to look very hard through my folders to post something again

    Warmest regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

    Interesting shot indeed David
Good to see a Pelican trying to eat its self.

Wonderful catch, and especially cool how the shape of the extruded (?) pouch fills in the curve of the body. Pose and techs excellent, of course!

Thanks Gabriela and John for the comments. I'm glad you like the frame.

Thanks Diane. Yes that is the pouch that is being pushed out (extruded) by the neck of the Pelican. Also I am not sure if that gland is the opening of the pouch to the crop/stomach or if it is a salivary gland of some type?

    Hi Dave,

The image is really gross! But I love John R's idea of a pelican eating itself - that will have me chuckling for a while...

Perfect image quality. But the view of the internal workings is always a bit gross! Fascinating to work out which bits are from where. Dark bit looks like the trachea, to me.

    Best wishes, Gerald

Wow. Never seen anything like that before David. The details and colours are lovely. The bird stands out real well against the BG colour. Nice one.

    Thanks everyone for the comments.

Gerald, I think you're right that does look like the trachea

Dave, a different post to say the least, maybe to clean out the 'ol pouch.
Nice beautiful blue ocean background and you even got some catchlight.

I caught and posted a similar action a couple of years ago but not such a perfect angle and moment as David got. But I looked back at the image and yes, it has to be the trachea. (Gross!) This was as far as it went. Two seconds later I managed to catch the head throw.

Wow Diane!! Can't figure out which one is groser? Your frame shows the trachea even better. A couple of wild captures for sure.

Hi Dave, very well timed to have captured this biology/anatomy lesson, and you have captured the angle of the bill so well. Excellent feather detail, tack sharp, and I do like the colour of the water.
