Dad has brought this fish for the two day old chick, after much struggling the chick gave up and mother ate it. Dad went off to catch a smaller one. I think that the male has the expression of a harassed father. Taken in very bright and contrasty early morning light which was difficult for the exposure.
Thats a great family shot David. Shows it all. How many chicks have they ? Can'tr find anything but a teeny little sugestion. Smooth out the shadow across the birds head. Should be quite easy. No big deal- just that now I,ve seen it- you know the rest !
A lovely piece of work all around.
John
Ps Looks like a Perch so there will be a spikey fin problem. Thats maybe why the chick refused it ?
Thanks John and Keith. Two chicks hatched and they sat on the other two eggs for almost a week. I kept going back to check and then had to miss three days; on my next visit the family had gone so I don't know if the other two eggs hatched or not.
Exposure looks fine. Too bad Dad did not hold he fish a little closer to the camera; that would have resulted in two better head angles. Bummer on the bad luck shadow on the face of the bird on the nest. Fine feather detail looks a bit smooth... Did you do anything to blur the BKGR or is it all natural?

Well done David, you captured a special moment. I could look at this for a while, very pleasing. I am set up near a nest as well, but so far, no chicks. I can't actually see the nest, but can hear them
Great interaction shot. Always a challenge to get all the head angles right for this complex of a shot. ( I have a lot of loon feeding shots with same issue). But, still very effective.
Yes to perhaps smoothing the shadow a bit. I do agree that the bg is a bit unusual looking.
Excellent shooting angle.
Interesting about them remaining on the eggs that long. The loons will usually give it 2-3 days after the first one hatches, and then give up on the remaining egg. Often when the unhatched egg is examined, it will have been infertile.
Cheers
Randy

David good job in tricky conditions, the background doesn't look quite right, I thnik it would be worth having another look at it. I don't know if you have downloaded the freebie Nik filters but I suspect they would do a good job there for you.
